20 MAY 2015

ROYAL VISIT TO MULLAGHMORE 2015
The visit of The Prince of Wales & The Duchess of Cornwall

On 20th May 2015 - as part of a 4-day official visit to Ireland, Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales (b.1948) - accompanied by his wife Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall (b.1947), paid an emotional visit to the scene of the murder of Mountbatten.

Earlier at The Model Arts Centre in Sligo, he commented - “At the time I could not imagine how we would come to terms with the anguish of such a deep loss since, for me, Lord Mountbatten represented the grandfather I never had.”  The Prince also commented - “through this dreadful experience, though, I now understand in a profound way the agonies borne by so many others in these islands, of whatever faith, denomination or political tradition.”

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall were accompanied by Mountbatten's grandson (and the Prince's cousin) -  The Hon. Timothy Knatchbull (b.1964) and his wife Isabella (b.1971).   They attended a peace and reconciliation prayer service in nearby Drumcliffe, and then went onto Mullaghmore, the place where Mountbatten sailed from on that fateful day on 27th August 1979. Timothy, who was just 14yrs old in 1979, is the son of Patricia, 2nd Countess Mountbatten of Burma (1924-2017) and John, 7th Lord Brabourne (1924-2005).  His twin brother Nicholas - known as 'Nicky', was killed in the same bomb explosion that killed Mountbatten - Timothy was badly injured, but luckily survived.

The Royal visit (which was emotional for all) was described by Mrs Mary McAleese (b.1951) a former President of Ireland (Uachtarán na hÉireann) as a “pilgrimage of the heart.”
